A Movement for Deaf Women's Rights

Deaf Women Aloud Initiative (DWAI) is a women-led, disability-inclusive NGO registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), committed to advancing the rights, visibility, and well-being of Deaf women and girls across Nigeria.

We work to eliminate barriers to education, healthcare, and civic participation — tackling gender-based violence, stigma, and discrimination through advocacy, capacity-building, and community-focused interventions.

Advocacy for Disability-Inclusive Healthcare in the FCT

DWAI engaged the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES) to advance disability-inclusive healthcare across the Federal Capital Territory. The meeting resulted in key commitments, including the proposed recruitment of sign language interpreters for Kuje General Hospital, integration of disability-disaggregated data into health information systems, inclusion of disability priorities in the FCT Council on Health agenda, and the review of a health sign language glossary for wider use. The engagement marked a significant milestone in improving accessible and equitable healthcare for persons with disabilities through policy and system-level reforms.

Periods Don't Pause Education Outreach

DWAI conducted a menstrual health outreach at the FCT School for Children with Special Needs, Kuje, empowering girls with accurate menstrual hygiene education and essential hygiene kits while engaging boys in conversations to reduce stigma and promote support. The program reached 70 students and established a fully stocked Pad Bank to ensure girls have continuous access to menstrual hygiene products, helping them stay in school with dignity and confidence.

Advocacy Visit on Disability-Inclusive Health Budgeting

DWAI led a strategic advocacy visit to the FCT Primary Health Care Board to advance disability-inclusive health budgeting across the six FCT Area Councils. Together with representatives of disability organizations, the team presented findings from its baseline assessment, highlighted barriers faced by persons with disabilities in accessing primary healthcare, and advocated for dedicated budget allocations. The engagement secured the Board's commitment to explore funding for disability-inclusive health services through the FCT Health Insurance Scheme's Vulnerable Funds Program, marking a significant step toward more accessible and equitable healthcare.

Pad Bank Initiative

DWAI highlighted the impact of its Pad Bank Initiative, which provides girls with disabilities with free sanitary pads, accessible menstrual health education, and ongoing hygiene support. Through disability-inclusive learning delivered in sign language, the initiative has empowered hundreds of Deaf girls with knowledge and confidence while promoting menstrual dignity and reducing stigma. The program continues to expand through strategic partnerships and sustainable fundraising efforts to reach more schools and communities across Nigeria.
